Webinar Replay: Matsu Battlefield Cultural Landscape

The Cold War Network was delighted to host Chun-Hsi Wang (Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Folk Arts and Cultural Heritage, National Taipei University, Taiwan) who shared the remarkable story of Matsu.

His 40 minute webinar explored how Matsu is transforming its unique “Battlefield Cultural Landscape”, a historical witness to the Cold War frontline, into a World Heritage potential site.

The Matsu archipelago in East Asia served as a crucial military outpost for the Republic of China government after 1949, defending against communist forces. It is renowned for having “the world’s most complete and authentic coastal defence and dense military strongholds”.

Following the end of the battlefield administration in 1992, military facilities became intertwined with Mindong architecture and resident life. His talk, therefore, charts Matsu’s application journey from its initiation in 2009 to its official designation as a Cultural Landscape in 2020.
