Nothe Fort will be marking National Cold War Heritage Week with special talks exploring its hidden Cold War Nuclear Bunker. In 1983, part of the historic fort was secretly converted into a local authority emergency centre as part of the UK’s civil defence preparations for nuclear war. Unknown to the local community at the time, this concealed facility was designed to house council staff who would coordinate disaster relief and rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of a nuclear strike.
During the event, visitors can join friendly and knowledgeable volunteers for a fascinating talk about the bunker, the wider civil defence network, and how local authorities prepared for the possibility of nuclear conflict during the Cold War. Objects from the fort’s Cold War Collection will also be on display, helping bring this remarkable and often overlooked chapter of local history to life. Talks will take place at 11:30am, 12:30pm, and 2:00pm, with free talk tickets available from the Gift Shop on arrival on a first come, first served basis. Admission to the fort is required.
