National Cold War Heritage Week 2026: Ilfracombe Museum

Tucked inside Ilfracombe Museum, this special display brings together a unique selection of Cold War objects drawn from a private collection rarely seen by the public.

The collector (John Hardwick) has spent years rescuing electronic equipment and associated material from disposal, preserving items that would otherwise have been dismantled for their component metals. The display ranges from components linked to Britain’s nuclear submarine programme to badges, ephemera and material reflecting public protest movements such as CND and Polaris.

National Cold War Heritage Week marks the first time this collection has been exhibited, offering visitors an opportunity to encounter objects that seldom make it into museum displays. Ilfracombe Museum is hosting the exhibition in support of this work, highlighting the value of private custodians in safeguarding Cold War heritage.

John will be present to talk through the collection on Friday 22 May and Saturday 23 May 2026.
