National Cold War Heritage Week 2026: Harrington Aviation Museum

Harrington Aviation Museum in Northamptonshire can boast two unique features. The first is that it is based in the original operations block of the 492nd / 801st Bomb Groups, who carried out clandestine operations delivering supplies to resistance groups behind enemy lines. The second unique feature is that in 1959, Harrington became a base for the three Thor Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles of 218 Squadron, Royal Air Force. The museum, in rural surroundings that befit its secret past, is keen to increase its Cold War profile. This year, we open our doors on May Bank Holiday weekend to allow visitors to explore the secrets of Thor. Our present modest, but expanding, exhibition which includes an original Thor equipment trailer, a half-scale Thor model and photography will be supplemented by talks about Thor and virtual tours of a launch pad. The WW2 section will also be open and we offer light refreshments.
