National Cold War Heritage Week 2026: Upper Heyford Heritage Centre

Step inside one of Britain’s most significant Cold War airbases during National Cold War Heritage Week at RAF Upper Heyford Heritage Centre. Explore the Heritage Centre and historic airbase to uncover its story, from the first airmen in 1913, through two World Wars, to its pivotal role as a US Air Force hub during the Cold War.

Visitors can enjoy self-guided tours on all open days, including 16–17 May before the official week, with a chance to see original buildings, aircraft, and Cold War-era military displays. During the main week, highlights include 20, 23, and 24 May, when guided Airbase Tours provide a deeper insight into life on a working Cold War base and the people who lived and worked there.

As part of National Cold War Heritage Week, on 24 May at 2:00pm following the morning Airbase Tour, David Tuch will give a special talk on his debut book, The Wireless Operator: The Untold Story of the British Sailor Who Invented the Modern Drug Trade. The book chronicles the life of Harold Derber, a British Merchant Navy veteran who collaborated with Fidel Castro on the Cuban refugee movement and later became the largest marijuana trafficker in American history, exploiting the Cuban–Colombian guns-for-drugs trade. One US intelligence document even speculated he was the KGB station chief for Miami. It’s a compelling, little-known Cold War story.

Perfect for history enthusiasts, veterans, and families alike, this week offers a unique opportunity to experience the heritage of Oxfordshire’s “Little America” and immerse yourself in its remarkable Cold War story.
